Exercise report, beautiful fall days

Wednesday morning, ran moderate pace around 45 minutes, through Pegan Cove to the tracks by the lake where Dad would take us with Zack.

40 pushups
80 situps

Yesterday morning, semi-run, more like 30 minutes, with 12 pullups on the half-down tree in our sliver of Cochituate state park.

a coding morning

submitting a random patch to taxonomy_xml (really taxonomy import / export)
in preparation to really using it for SCF
and sitting in the sunshine :-)

(inside, it's still approximately freezing outdoors)

Lunch at Amy Ruth's soul food

I think was the name of the place. Off Malcom X on 115th or thereabouts.

As I instant messaged to Judi...

in response to her
how r u holding up in the big apple

4:40 uh, this site we're estimating enhancements for gets scarier and scarier the more we try to work with it, our main server went down for an as-yet undetermined cause, i have not exactly vanquished the work in front of me... oh, and my friend Dimitrius took me to the Harlem Tea Room, which was no longer there :-P
went to a soul food place instead

Left knee

Left knee has been reliably starting to hurt exactly 2.5 miles into any run.

Sunday (after a long run on the Saturday) it started hurting right away. Yesterday though I covered a lot of ground in Boston running for the furnace part, and going to Chinatown on foot from the Roxbury/Dorchester area, and the knee never hurt at all. My left foot hurt some, but then the shoes I was in had no souls, at all– rubber long fell off, just the foam or whatever.

Billy Bragg, missing him by a day and a city, twice

i was in the middle of Billy Bragg's "Which Side Are You On" when I stopped it to not be rude entering Encuentro 5 for the Stop the Wars meeting.

And they will be promoting their Saturday, October 25, Halloween party against war at, among other places, the performances by Billy Bragg in Somerville.

But I actually already knew that... from the amazing built-in plugin for Songbird that lets me know when any musicians in my MP3 collection are playing nearby.

Helped Grandpa move the boat and ate like a couple of kings

The Instead is now in Sesuit harbor, Mom and I drove out to help Grandpa empty it and move it.

Ate a banana and a plum and a pear, and a few pistachios, but didn't really eat anything all day. Until dinner just now at Van Rensselaer's. My standard heaping, impossibly stacked salad bar plate, the spicy (not really) Thai tofu, bok choy, and rice early bird special, AND the portabello mushroom plate. Fantastic. And Grandpa's vegetables and some of his rice, and of course the bread, including at the end to leave the plate spotless.

Red Arrow Diner in Manchester

was breakfast last Sunday, with Andrew and Manda and Rich.

Worth the half hour late, even for the stripped down vegan option, heh.

61 Lowell St
Manchester, NH 03101

... that was a very good food day, Manda made chili. I wish I'd eaten more and taken some to go too... sadly, was just barely holding on to the post-Yom Kippur not overeating kick.

Learned to Dance?

Walking back from the post office today, I think I learned to dance with my hips while listening to Chuck Berry on the iPod.

If dancing badly is not something I needed to atone for, I don't know what is.

dinner last night: chickpeas were going bad last Friday fried, with dark soy sauce

I rinsed them a lot and fried for a long time...

Yeah, I should probably not eat alone.

software contractor on an important project

For SCF: "Please give Ben Melancon every assistance - he is a software contractor working for my group in Neurology Research on an important project."

Yep, that's me! :-P

I will not start sentences with So

anymore.

I think it can be interpreted, in text anyway, as sort of aggressive or otherwise off-putting. In any case I do it to much.

So... no more.

Checked the cesspool

Just one inch below the pipe. Given relatively light usage (me out of town a lot, Mom just left Sunday), that's not great.

Called the septic people and set up a Monday morning appointment to pump it out.

got 8 hours sleep last night and now napped for a couple hours

This cold or whatever is not leaving me alone.

And it's helping keep me from even the easy work things I know need to get done, and so we get the never-welcome follow-up e-mails from clients. UGH. Re-asking questions I've half composed answers to. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

Rich grandchildren

Mom was thinking about Cassidy, and how he needs to see some of his neighbors' homes. When he was here, he asked her where the downstairs bathroom was.

"You don't have any?"

Dad would not be happy. Middle-class children were bad enough.

Coding with scientists, things overheard

"What's the collective known for a group of bats?"

"When the dead birds are brought in, they have all kinds of parasites on them."

(that's a good thing)

Best response, ever, to Agaric seeking more information regarding a request for proposal

Aack!

To Mount Major!

I have to leave home at 10 a.m.

In Bolton by 11 a.m.

Manchester by 2 p.m. How bad is that?

http://www.mapquest.com/mq/6-Kl5XtXtX

A half hour at Rich and Manda's and then to the mountain by 4 p.m.

Two hour hike takes three hours, we're still good reaching the summit at 8 p.m. worst case scenario?

(and all the times look better if you take it off "Shortest Distance" as Cathy pointed out...

I understand why you might want to punch me

Old note.

Bikeriding through some of the poorest sections of St. Louis, starting just a block from the mansions where Ian lives, I thought for the first time ever— if some people here were to try to beat me up just because I'm white and not evidently poor, I wouldn't blame them.

I would be fighting back viciously, but I would understand where they were coming from.

This is the economic and social insanity of having little opportunity to do anything productive and unmet needs at the same time.

Elm Bank exploring at night

So the mansion is now mostly restored! Lights on and all. I can't believe it.

M and I explored by flashlight the gardens and especially the area with all the contoured paths and seats and structures and the little crafted ponds with some large frogs.

I didn't notice which towns each police car came from but I bet it was one each from Wellesley, Natick, and Dover.

After two passed right by us on our way out the third one stopped.

"Did you hear loud music coming from anywhere around here?"

"Yes, we think there's a wedding party in the function hall up here."

Seeing the gay pride parade of Provincetown's Carnival with Manda and Rich, boat service with excitement courtesy Grandpa and me

The server failed just before my grandfather and I were to take my friends Manda and Rich to Provincetown by boat for the 2008 Carnival's Gay Pride parade (or LGBTQQIAF pride I think gets all the current acronyms). I started trying to take triage measures using wireless on the pier but we drove home for more reliable wireless.

I felt so bad my crisis was messing up their one day, that they'd both only barely gotten off from work in the first place.

i offered to do the lines for the boat and have them leave me at the pier, but Grandpa didn't want to go without me as a deck hand
