In loving, living memory, John Melançon 1928 – 2007
The world didn't end today, but no Mayan ever (ever) said that it would. As Daniel Feder wrote: "Actual Mayans had other plans for today.... 6,000 EZLN members marching in complete silence into five Chiapas cities, in an action organized in secret that took the country by surprise."

More detail from Narco News:
Today, when many people around the world claimed, errantly, that a supposed "Mayan prophecy" predicted "the end of the world" for this date, 50,000 authentic Mayans in Chiapas, Mexico, came down from the mountains and marched in silence.
They were from the rebel Zapatista indigenous communities and they marched in the cities of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Ocosingo, Comitan, Las Margaritas and Altamirano - the same five cities that on January 1, 1994 the Zapatista Army of National Liberation took through a guerilla attack.
Since shortly after that, the Zapatistas have not fired a shot, and have constructed autonomous zones in much of the state of Chiapas where they now manage their own farming, education, health care and governance without accepting any government funds.
The came into those cities this morning and left this afternoon the same way they arrived, in total silence. (They had numbers taped to their ski-masks, which helped each group's members find each other while maintaining silence.)
