Radical Education Project first workshop class

Summary to a friend:

The first one was quite good. In addition to presenting how messed up things are and the need for radical change in a really good way to talk about, to continue the conversation with just anyone -- how the reaction to squeezed profits is to shift costs onto all of us (less pay for more work, but also tax subsidies, services cuts, so that you can come up with examples forever), the parts that were new to me:

- top 50 hedge fund managers paying themselves an average of $588 million

Consensus with Sean Madsen - Boston Skillshare

Consensus boils down to forming a decision that everyone agrees on.

What happens

Ideally, you don't ever get to that point if you do the rest of it in a good way. If you do...

Prerequisites

Being very intentional about the way you do things. If you have people who want this process to be organic, that will be difficult.

Having empathy.

If the group agrees to a time limit on a topic or meeting, make sure upcoming limits are announced in advance.

Check with people who may need to leave early.

Starting a seed library in Boston - Boston Skillshare

Led by Andrew.

The girl1 doing the writing on the blackboard, she talks so quietly!

Girl in the middle back: Stage voice: Somebody is going to have to share a flier with somebody. (Lot of people in the room but I think they had enough.)

One of us in the audience: Avocado can grow six months or more after the seed in there.

Guy in audience: Red Delicious apples once actually were.

We are going to talk about:
Garlic
Beans
Tomatoes
Corn
Squash

Reading White Oleander; to care and be strong? ...a little more at the link

Reading White Oleander, by Janet Fitch. Right in the middle now. Through to the end of Chapter 17, Astrid is at Claire's. (OK, it's official, I do not remember names. I just had to look up Astrid's.) It's been too long since I've read anything not online; read anything that is not politics or technology, Drupal.

It is good. It reminds me that I am moved by words, no by narrative, as much as anything. That I am made to care about the characters.

Change

I think http://change.org has gotten way better. At least I like the posts coming up on the front page, and the quality of the commenting community.

(Of course I still think we need better tools to bring us together around issues, hence VisionsUnite....)

PWGD technical implementation note: Topics mapped to taxonomy terms (Drupal)

See http://mlncn.com/node/928 for soaring rhetoric on why to do this.

* topics will be mapped to Taxonomy terms in Drupal, which will ultimately be powered by Community Managed Taxonomy (CMT) which will enable interested people in the community to (unlike other community managed taxonomy, though, voting will have to be restricted by those engaged in the topic, so that athiests can't come along and merge fundamentalist Christian and Wiccan topic categories just to see what happens.

A better way to promote awesome work

Kara
I need to start making calls to convince people to do an email blast for one of our stories

Benjamin Melançon
oof

People Who Give a Damn / VisionsUnite will provide a better way to do that sort of promotion... not a replacement for working the phones though

Kara
hmmm
such as...

Benjamin Melançon
well by having e-mail blast lists that aren't controlled by an individual or group

Kara
hmm

On being able to get what you want

Manda: You can get whatever you want, you just have to set out to do it and start taking the small steps.

Rich: Some things are realistically out of reach. (Being a race car driver; drive in video games instead.)

Manda: You could still go work in a garage [etc.]
May find on the path another path that is what you really want.

Me: There should be more basic societal supports for everyone – raising children and making a living should not be completely all-consuming.

Collaboration and No Ownership without a Free-for-all

Hi Megan, hi Anjali,

> letting it go into a free for all will hinder the ability to really
> search for what you're looking for and to keep the information readable
> and accessible.

Which is why the main technical innovation I see for the project is democratically moderated communication - a process where discussions can be filtered for relevance without appointed moderators.
