In loving, living memory, John Melançon 1928 – 2007
Just made the 14 hour, 23 minute trip from Sissonville, West Virginia to Wellfleet, Massachusetts in just over 11 hours.
Thank you, ye gods of speed traps, for clearing them out of my way.
I never thought it would be my personality to be the fastest car on the road – in my grandfather's minivan no less – but except for a couple attempts at having a pace car, and once in traffic, no one passed me in the whole 815 miles i was on the road.
For most of the trip from New Jersey through to Rhode Island there were some frequently spectacular cloud-to-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning— and sometimes, frankly, it looked like ground-to-sky, but i'm pretty sure lightning doesn't do that.
The 5:20 a.m. sunrise was a red disc you could look right at.
By 5:30 or so, it was an orange ball you didn't want to look directly at.
High tide here. It's beautiful.
Who needs sleep. I think i'll go for a short barefoot run, then shower.
