In loving, living memory, John Melançon 1928 – 2007
Spoke to Grandpa on the phone today while I walked Zelda. We took care of Rusty for the past couple weeks while Grandpa and Barbara were on a cruise from Argentina around the southern end of Chile and north to Santiago.
They are perfectly happy with a woman president.
Chile has three industries: tourism, [something], and copper mining.
He gave some rather suspect figures of 30% or 40% upper class and 30% or 40% middle class and the rest working class, but I don't doubt that is the self-identification. "Unlike here where there is no middle class anymore," Grandpa said.
The copper mines are owned by the government and the revenues used for health and education for the people.
Santiago very clean, more European city than American.
Santiago, the people keep the streets clean themselves. Very against hoodlums
Government has plenty of people to clean the streets.
And then he went on a (possibly related?) tangent about how prostitution is the oldest profession and that if people choose to do it that should be fine. Same as homosexuality.
Not to get involved in other people's lives
tell other people what to do
