In loving, living memory, John Melançon 1928 – 2007
On the day the ADL's opposition to a mosque near the site of the World Trade Center came under widespread condemnation, i saw a reference to their opposition to the U.S. Congress recognizing the 85-year-old genocide of Armenians in the Ottoman (Turkish) empire. Given that apparent right-wing goal in Israel and the U.S. to do everything possible to manufacture a war against Muslims everywhere, and create a reliance on war and paranoia (and making Israel a military outpost), i wondered why, if not for diplomacy with Turkey, they would oppose the resolution, except to try to score 100% in being on the wrong side of every issue?
Despite acknowledging that Turkey's genocide of Armenians was in fact genocide, the ADL continues
to firmly believe that a Congressional resolution on such matters is a counterproductive diversion and will not foster reconciliation between Turks and Armenians and may put at risk the Turkish Jewish community and the important multilateral relationship between Turkey, Israel and the United States.
The explicit lack of moral courage in this statement is made worse and more painful by the ADL's lack of concern for the Turkish government's feelings when it comes to nine people being killed on a Turkish-registered ship bringing aid to Gaza.
