In loving, living memory, John Melançon 1928 – 2007
Dear IKEA co-workers,
After trying every office supply store and DIY home construction store in the area, we finally made the pilgrimage to IKEA.
In addition to a futon we chose in the store, we had picked out this IVAR storage combination - http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S39858246 - but there was no example (at least in three parts of the store IKEA co-workers thought there would be!) and several co-workers were unable to tell us the parts to get. A similar combination was featured in a pamphlet in the store, and it seemed we had the information we needed, but the part numbers even for this didn't quite match what was present in the aisles and bins we were sent to. Nonetheless, everything is correct and the shelf is assembled, but the crossbrace support is half the size it ought to be.
The part number we were looking for based on the similar configuration in the pamphlet was 877.496.00. This part number was not present, at least not anywhere near the bins we were directed to. I think the one for the shelf we were trying to build (from the online catalog, it's a pity part numbers aren't available there) must be that size or larger.
Further, a number of the shelves (5) did not have their pins for support attached, and we were provided with the wrong size replacement at the return/exchanges desk-- too small, shelves can fall through. The shelves are part number 900.950.32.
We were wondering if it would be possible for you to mail us these parts, the crossbrace and the pins for the shelves.
This would make a slightly frustrating experience instead fantastic. Maybe we could place an order for three more shelves and have these mis-directed parts included?
Thank you very much for being there,
Benjamin Melançon

And we find that above and beyond customer service is not where IKEA makes its reputation... in short, "you can come to the store and fix it". Ick.
Hello Ben,
Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We apologize for any
inconveniences.IKEA does carry replacement parts for a majority of our products.
In order to obtain spare parts, we recommend returning to the store
location in which the purchase was originally made, along with your
receipt, any damaged pieces, and the assembly instructions (to show
which pieces are needed). At that time, a Customer Service
Representative will be more than happy to assist you.If you no longer have a receipt, many of our store locations have
bins of the most commonly used hardware in the Customer Service area.
The hardware is typically found in bins attached to the wall and is
available at no charge. You will need to bring in the shorter crossbrace along with your
receipt to the return desk for exchange for the 39" observator
crossbrace article #-87749600 and we will also be glad to give you
any missing parts needed. We do hope that this information has been helpful, and we thank you
for your inquiry.Best Regards,
Debra
