Web Design in practice
My personal preference is for fast loading and clear navigation, so left to my own devices I design most web pages with tables and text. I believe in separating form from content, and I start most projects using cascading style sheets to dictate form. Unfortunately, older browsers only partially implement stylesheets, which is worse than not implementing them at all. Because most of the cool stuff that style sheets can do can also be done with tables, albeit in about twice as much code, for sites that should be accessible to everyone I will continue to rely on tables for layout, as in this site.
